Abridged Artist Statement:

I began this series with a growing discontentment in my surroundings of a modern American city with its noise, traffic, billboards, shopping centers, gas stations, and fast food restaurants. I was drawn to the Congaree National Park because it is ht most well-reserved natural environment within a reasonable proximity. I sought an experience in an environment which did not seek to capture my attention for its own gain.

After many trips and much time spent on the boardwalk of the park, I was drawn to a kind of clearing in the distance, which lead me to step off the boardwalk and onto the forest floor. During this experience I could feel my heart rate rise and senses heighten, and I had transformed into some kind of wild, primordial human in this environment which is thousands of years old. In these works, I aim to convey the disorienting and overwhelming characteristics of this massive landscape, as well as my experiences participating in it.
