Andrea Kantrowitz

February 18 - 20, 2020

Andrea Kantrowitz is a leading researcher in the field of drawing and cognition studies, one of the founders of the Thinking Through Drawing international symposium series, and an accomplished painter.

As an artist, educator, and researcher, Andrea Kantrowitz investigates art and cognition. In her large still-life paintings, she tears apart her subjects to reveal their underlying structure. Her students learn how to delve deeply into their own motivations and processes of meaning making.  Kantrowitz believes drawing represents a solid example of human imagination at work. In her research, she uses the theories and methods of cognitive psychology to research the hidden dynamics of artists' thinking processes. She has lectured and led workshops on art and cognition internationally.

She is the graduate program coordinator and assistant professor in Art Education at the State University of New York - New Paltz.  As director of the Thinking through Drawing Project at Teachers College, Columbia University, she organized a series of international drawing and cognition research symposia, in collaboration with colleagues from the U.K. She holds a B.A in Art and Cognition from Harvard University and a MFA in Painting from Yale.

Dr. Kantrowitz’s lecture, “Drawing Thought: How drawing helps us observe, discover, and invent" is free and open to the public.
